"Unpacking Diversity" Seminar/Discussion Series

Our main activity is the "Unpacking Diversity" seminar and discussion series.

  • Focus: Explore topics related to social justice and equity in the sciences in higher education

  • Aim: Create a more inclusive environment in higher education - for students, faculty, and staff.

  • Motivation: Much of the material we discuss can also relate to society at large, not just within the walls of academia. We believe that through conversations, we will understand ourselves better and the role that we as individuals play in creating and maintaining welcoming and inclusive spaces for learning, growth, and employment.

  • Participation: This learning community is open to anyone within the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University, so that we can create an environment of intimacy and familiarity and to provide a space where people can feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and opinions.

The series is presented as a set of 3-4 seminars held each academic year (1-2 per quarter) with a varied format of engagement. Typical seminars follow this format:

  • Open to the geosciences community (students, faculty, staff, administration)

  • 1-1.5 hours in the afternoon in Burt or Wilkinson

  • Coffee, tea, and light snacks served (because, of course, it is the afternoon)

As we continue to organize this series, we hope to...

  • Spark curiosity in topics of equity, diversity, and inclusion within our college

  • Create a space where everyone can learn from one another

  • Build a stronger and more inclusive CEOAS Community

End-of-Year Keynote Talk

At the end of the academic year in Spring quarter, we host a keynote event with an invited outside speaker with noted expertise in diversity/equity/inclusion issues for graduate students in STEM.

Keynote events are organized for a larger audience:

  • A 1-1.5 hour talk is given in a larger, auditorium-type space (room capacity of 200+)

  • Open for attendance by the greater OSU public. Community members, undergraduate students, and staff are encouraged to attend.

  • Coffee, tea, light snacks and food

  • CEOAS-specific Q&A session typically hosted the same day

Past speakers include Dr. Laura Pulido (UO) and Dr. Julie Posselt (USC). Specific details can be found in the above links of past series.
